Evelyn hadn’t been able to stop thinking about the upcoming party, or about the potential of the farm itself. She was well aware both were diversionary tactics, but they were so effective that she didn’t care. She reminded herself that she controlled the thoughts that passed through her head. She could fill her brain with images of her husband in Gino’s arms, or she could spend her time conjuring up magical movies in her mind, where figures flitted across a candlelit garden, journalists wrote glowing reviews of the resort, and the farm burst forth with all manner of bounty.

Her inner world was often far richer than her outer one. It had been thus as a teenager, when her imagination had carried her far away from her parents’ cramped little post-war house with its pebble-dash exterior. She’d visualised worlds of wealth, grandeur and success, of dashing men (wearing 501s, naturally) and palatial homes, of infinity pools and white beaches. The major revelation had turned out to be her power to manifest all of it.

This vision been the key to her professional success. Seb had raw talent, grand ambitions, and bucket loads of charm. She had the ability to see how things could be and to make them so. Her finely honed childhood skill for fabricating realms was, it turned out, a valuable commercial skill. So people wanted a little taste of Malibu in Notting Hill? She gave them Seb’s Kitchen, a space so perfectly conceived that it allowed customers to forget, for a few precious moments, their reality beyond its doors. It was she who conjured up glossy, verdant living walls, sleek white resin islands and wicker pendant lamps for their event space. Sure, Seb was the product, but over the years she created a universe for him that was so beautiful, so immersive, so aspirational, that it became as large a part of their brand as Seb himself.

There was still so much further to take Seb Macleod Ltd. The next obvious step was to develop it as a full lifestyle brand, with soft furnishings, crockery, glassware, cutlery and, of course, cookware. But for the moment, the potential that she saw in this charming resort distracted her mind’s eye. Sorrel Farm was already a beautifully executed experience, and it had so much more to give.

Her enthusiasm had been contagious. Zoe and Jess were equally excited about the upcoming party, and the three of them buzzed with ideas. Evelyn was intent on the guests receiving an education on how the farm worked as a whole, how important the transition to biodynamic farming would be, and how the farm’s produce fed into the resort. The beauty of Sorrel Farm lay in its authenticity.

She’d also been mulling Zoe’s comments around scaling up the farm’s production by building out some form of distribution. Surely that was something they could achieve relatively quickly, and if they played their cards right, they could piggy-back on the publicity that the party would generate to raise awareness of the farm’s produce.
